  • Aprašymas: This film begins by showing a gathering of workers taking place outdoors near the SECMO offices. A man speaks; the participants, seated on the grass, vote by show of hands on proposed motions. A second gathering in a garden is shown: a man, standing on a bench, speaks to an assembly of mostly nurses in work attire. This is followed by some shots of train stations and trains standing on the tracks. In the background of some of the images, the Maurice Thorez housing estate in Ivry-sur-Seine can be seen: this is probably the Austerlitz station. Finally, a third gathering in front of a building is shown. The crowd is extremely large. At the turn of the 1950s, the social climate was tense: from 1947 until the middle of the 1950s, there was a succession of strikes, always supported and even driven by the PCF and the CGT. Certain trades, such as miners, steelworkers and railway workers, were particularly active in terms of social demands during this period. The images used in this film, which date from the early 1950s, could have been recorded in March 1951: on 19 March a major day of action by civil servants took place to demand a pay rise, while employees of the RATP and the gas and electricity companies had been on strike for several days. The strike was renewed until the beginning of April for the railway workers. Two years later, in the summer of 1953, there was a major civil service strike. The film could also have been shot on this occasion. During the whole month of August 1953, the strikers protested against the Laniel decree-laws modifying the retirement schemes. Launched on August 4, 1953 and then massively followed, this strike paralyzed France: no trains ran and mail was no longer delivered during the month of August. Work finally resumed on August 25, 1953 after the government gave up on pension reform. Film is considered to have been made between 1950 and 1953.
